Melody of Initial Aspiration

Wai Hoi Yau - Hong Kong

I believe that it is difficult to sustain a livelihood by art creation in any country or region, especially in Hong Kong.  Although Hong Kong is the largest trading market for artworks in Asia, there are very few artworks created by Hong Kong artists being traded.

This artwork, which is created in the Surrealism style, aims to express the powerlessness of being a Hong Kong painter.  Without the opportunities of displaying my artworks in the stage of large-scale art fairs, I feel powerlessness.  However, I choose to persist and to hope for the miracle as I have a great passion for art and painting.

The young man in this artwork is ME.  I am using a broken violin without any string, which is a metaphor for my artwork and painting, to play the Melody of Silence and this melody can only be listen by people’s heart.  Maybe such a special music performance attract a few cats and pigeons to listen but nobody stay and appreciate the performance, just because nobody notice that there is a performance in a such a special stage—a stair beside a broken footbridge.  The stair is my stage, and the sunlight serves as spotlights lighting my stage when I am performing.  However, I am surrounded by the fence and it becomes an obstacle prohibiting me from stepping forward and being noticed by more audiences.

The Royal Road to the Palace of Art, including the Sothebys and the Christie’s, is right in front of me.  I can see clearly the billboard of the world’s three biggest art exhibitions including La Biennale di Venezia, Sao Paulo Art Biennial, and Kassel Documenta.  However, I cannot stride over the fence and overcome the obstacle.  I can just stay in “my stage” and play the violin silently.  I wish that a faraway pigeon could listen to the melody and carry a message of hope to me.  At this moment, what I can do is keeping on playing my Melody of Initial Aspiration.  Can you listen to my melody?
