Death of a Stag

Sarah Martin-Nuss - United States of America

Death of a Stag is an oil painting named after a poem published in a book of Spiritualist writings by the artist's great grandmother, Lula Lee Locher. In the original poem published in 1961, the protagonist witnesses the soul of a dying stag leaving its body as the stag bleeds out into a meadow. This image mirrors Lula Lee’s imagined memory of the moment Lula's own mother died during her birth.
