Simplicity in Motion #9

Adam Detre - Finland

Adam's love of nature and natural phenomena are often used as references for his work. He prefers to create series of minimal, abstract sculpture which seek to emulate the beauty found within Nature. They are inspired by organic forms and created in series using natural, often salvaged, materials. Part of the dream is to Environmental Artworks in the Public domain.

With Simplicity in Motion #9, Adam wanted to highlight the natural beauty of the wood itself. By carving concentric circles, he wants to embellish this very unique piece of wood.

Just as water ripples when the surface is broken, Adam seeks to create a similar illusion. The concentric circles are carved to give the idea that the ripples are diminishing and will disappear just as they would on the surface of water.

The piece is carved from a salvaged Philippine Acacia tree that was originally cut down to make space for the widening of the national highway near Dumaguete in the Southern Visayas region of Philippines. The owner of the tree, whose great grandfather had planted the tree many years earlier, contacted Adam directly to ask if something could be made with the wood before it was sold as firewood. Adam immediately bought the whole tree. Simplicity in Motion #8 - LUNAR has been completed, sold and installed using other parts of the same tree.

It is an honour and a pleasure to make from this tree and try to give it a second life.
