Greenery Room - Watercolour and Gouache on paper

Edward O. Wilson defined biophilia as, “the urge to affiliate with other forms of life” in his book Biophilia (1984). He explained that humans have an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life. Meeting with other people, cuddling your pet or taking a walk to the park are experiences we need to survive in a busy and modern life. Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, we have been living a life with restrictions that have reduce our connections to these experiences and increased our time indoors. Without realizing, we unconsciously make an effort to reconnect through acts such as bringing plants into our living spaces.

By watering them, placing them by the sun and even just looking at them in quiet contemplation, we are consoled, comforted and filled with positive emotions and feelings. I wanted to share my acknowledgement of the quiet power of the plants thorough this painting. I described the shapes and colours of the natural beauty in dark and solid lines, and use colours to represent the energy and liveliness that brings small hope and expectation that is needed to get through difficult times.
