Ruminations of a woman I know

Shravani Sharma - United Kingdom

Art is not always meant to be pretty, and I know this might look disturbing to some. However, through my work, I try to raise awareness for those unheard stories from regular women which are so easy to ignore. Most women are silent because of the culture, patriarchy, lack of awareness, illiteracy, or just as they haven't had any role models to look up to.

This art depicts another such practice of female foeticide, which is the process of finding out the sex of the foetus and undergoing abortion if it is a girl. Although it is illegal, many people continue to practice it. Besides this, there are some communities which practice female infanticide - the practice of killing the girl child once she is born. India has one of the highest female foeticide incidents in the world. The female child population in the age group of 0-6 years declined from 78.83 million in 2001 to 75.84 million in 2011.

I hope that through this work, people at least know that such dark traditions still exist and find means to eradicate them.
