Scriptum I

Rima Day - United States of America

A needle for me is like a pen for a writer. Every stitch I make is like a letter in the alphabet. As a writer’s words create layers of meanings, my work has layers, too. Some parts are bold and clear. Others are hidden under layers.

The number of threads increases as I stitch, forming structures that resemble tree veins, root systems, or blood vessels. Those shapes have something in common. They all split into thinner appendages either to absorb or distribute nutrition. The similarity between nature and human body fascinates me. I wonder if this is how the distribution of love would look like; pathways and strings of connection, where something flows from you to another person.

I use red thread because red is the color of blood, which to me represents vitality, love and life. It also symbolizes human connection in the Japanese culture that I was raised in. Perhaps, the hanging thread is my attempt to establish a connection with the world.
